    Jordan & AJ’s Wedding 10-27-24

I love playing for couples like Jordan and AJ. They wanted to hear their own flavors of music, and they wanted me to avoid the overplayed wedding hits once dancing started, but they also understood that my job is to make people dance, and they gave me the freedom to do just that. Another plus is that they happened to want to hear music that I enjoy– Lo-Fi electronic music, indie rap, and country, with some classics mixed in, and they didn’t mind if there wasn’t a radio-friendly version. It was about the vibe and the music. I’d have probably listened to the same songs had I not been working yesterday!

Yesterday’s wedding took place at the Sunset Cliff Resort on Lake Travis. It’s a beautiful spot, with a large lawn that overlooks the lake. It has everything needed for a gorgeous outdoor wedding. It’s great for a DJ, as you can pull in and load right where you’ll play, and one setup covers the ceremony, cocktails, dinner and dancing. Truly an all-in-one location!

    Sunset Cliff Resort Lake Travis

The entire day was a relaxed, low-key affair. There was no timeline, no planner, nothing but me and a big group of the couple’s family and friends. Everyone was pleasant, and everyone seemed to be enjoying the music at all times. During cocktails, I saw a couple of the older guests get up and dance by their seats when I put on Mac Miller, and I knew I was in the right place.

When it finally came time to officially start dancing, people were ready. I’d seen many of them dancing in place during cocktails and dinner, and everyone was ready to go, so when “Neon Moon” came on, the dance floor filled up more or less instantly. It stayed full for the duration of the dancing, which only lasted for an hour. I’d have gladly played on, but I was told they had a hard stop. I was able to sneak in one extra song, so I let the country roads take everyone home.

Here are the songs I played. And no, it’s not a typo. I played “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma” twice in a row. As the song was winding down, someone came running from the dance floor and said the groom wants to know if I can play the song again as soon as it’s over. You bet I can! You should have seen the groom launch himself in the air when it came on again!

  • Katie & Daniel’s Wedding 10-26-24

    Katie & Daniel’s Wedding 10-26-24

Yesterday’s wedding got off to a rough start, but only because I arrived to find there were two flights of stairs between me and where I had to set up. I didn’t know this ahead of time, because I was white-labeling for another company, and I guess they didn’t think to ask about stairs, and I didn’t think to check for myself ahead of time. I’ve only myself to blame! Nonetheless, I always give myself a huge time cushion, so I had everything inside and was completely set and ready to go an hour before my scheduled start time.

Stairs aside, the Quince Lakehouse is a terrific wedding venue, and one I hope to back at soon, albeit with a roadie next time! It sits right over the Colorado River, and offers a stunning view of the water.

From there, the evening went beautifully. I had the chance to play with a saxophone accompaniment for part of the night. I’ve worked in the past with Colin Houlihan, so when I learned he was going to be playing along with me, I was happy. He’s great, and easy to work with. Best of all, crowds love him, which means the love me by extension! In all, it always makes for a fun night when I get to play alongside any musician, but especially someone I’ve worked well with in the past.

I felt very in tune with the crowd all night, as if I were always just a half step ahead of where they wanted to go, and I was able to lead them on a fun musical journey. Perhaps the best example of that came when a guest came up and asked if I could play “Fernando” by ABBA sometime soon. As she said that, I was in the act of pressing play on the song I had cued up: “Fernando” by ABBA. She was shocked, to say the least, and joined the screaming guests on the dance floor to sing along with the song.

Formula 1 Tower Club, Day Three 10-20-24

When I was asked to DJ the Formula 1 Tower Club events this past weekend, I was already booked on the Saturday, which meant they only got me for two of their event’s three days. I don’t know who they had come in for day two, but I get the feeling he was something of a one-trick pony. When I walked in yesterday morning at 8am, one by one the entire staff told me they were glad I was back, and all shared a version of the same story: yesterday’s guy treated it like his own private rave. Apparently, he played nothing but EDM music the entire time, despite the audience being anything but an EDM crowd.

This hunch was backed up throughout the day, as time after time, guests came up to me and told me how glad they were to see me back behind the decks. The crowd is pretty much the same for all three days, as they pay some exorbitant sum for admission to the club for the entire weekend. In any event, I wasn’t there on Saturday to hear the other guy, but I’m pretty confident he didn’t have a very good read on the crowd. And while I hate to brag, I definitely did. By the very end I had a table of older gentlemen leaping around the room rapping along with the Beastie Boys. What can I say? I’m good at my job!

  • Winnie and Max’s Wedding 10-19-24

    Winnie and Max’s Wedding 10-19-24

I DJ’ed yesterday at the Allegro Wedding & Events Venue in Dripping Springs. It was my first time there, and I hope to be back soon. It’s an understated, modern yet rustic venue with a history to it, but a place that’s been kept up and modernized over time. It has everything needed for a wedding, including both an outdoor ceremony area and a chapel, several outdoor spaces for cocktails and a comfortable indoor space with air conditioning for a reception. It’s a space that can easily be transformed with lighting into nearly any aesthetic of vibe you are seeking.

The couple and their friends were a laid-back, fun-loving group, and it was a joy to play for them. Their timeline provided plenty of time to eat and enjoy one another’s company, while still leaving nearly 3 hours for dancing. Despite that extended time for tunes, it seemed that hardly anyone left early, and the dance floor stayed full up until the final song.

Here are the songs I played to create a soundtrack for their special day!

Formula 1 Tower Club, Day One 10-18-24

You might think an 8-hour-long gig that starts at 8:30 am might be a drag, especially when you hear I was out of bed at 5:30 am in order to be there and set up on time, but you’d be wrong. Yesterday’s event practically flew by, both figuratively and literally (it was an auto race!), and I had a lot of fun.

I DJ’ed in one of the private clubs at the Formula 1 race. Yesterday was the first of three days of events happening at the Circuit of the Americas, as drivers, and fans, from around the world converged on Austin for a weekend of racing. The nature of the event gave me almost unlimited freedom regarding what to play, as there were guests of all ages, and from all backgrounds and walks of life, and this wasn’t a dance. I was there to provide a great soundtrack for a day of fun, and if the number of high fives, fist bumps, compliments, and business cards taken is any indication, I was successful.

While my DJ set ran from 8:30 to 4:30, I had some downtime, as I switched from music to live feed of the race announcers when there were races happening on the track. Not that it would have made a difference. Those cars are LOUD, and the Tower Club is positioned directly over the track, so no one would have heard my music anyway. On the plus side, from my DJ booth I had one of the best seats in the house to watch the races! Coupled with complimentary breakfast and lunch buffets and an on-site barista making coffee and espresso, I was set!

All told I probably played for 6 hours. Check out the variety of what I was able to play for my appreciative audience yesterday!

    Megan & Kevin’s Wedding 10-11-24

Yesterday’s wedding was held at the Steiner Ranch Steakhouse in Austin. It’s a great place for a banquet of any sort, and an absolutely perfect place for a wedding. And I’m not just saying that because I was served a delicious ribeye steak last night!

The wedding ceremony took place in a separate room, and I was only there to provide music for dinner and dancing. Many of the family members, and guests, came from Chicago, which no doubt influenced the couple’s choice intro songs, both of which are from The Blues Brothers. That’s one of my favorite movies, and I’ve got the soundtrack on vinyl, so it was easy to have those songs cued up for the grand introductions. After that, dinner was served, and I tucked into my aforementioned ribeye.

The group was lively and fun, and very friendly, too. They were full of compliments, and seemed to genuinely enjoy all the music I played. I’ve listed it all below, as always in the order played, along with notes where applicable.

  • Deb & Andrew’s Wedding 10-5-24

    Deb & Andrew’s Wedding 10-5-24

I DJ’ed a wedding in Dripping Springs yesterday, at Camp Lucy, a venue at which I frequently perform. This was my third time playing there this year, and I’ll be there again next month. Happily, it’s a great venue. It’s easy to load in and out of the various event spaces, of which they have many, the venue staff is friendly, and the in-house catering makes fantastic food. Best of all, wedding guests always seem really happy and relaxed at Camp Lucy, and events there have a posh, yet laid back, vibe that is perfect for a wedding.

Yesterday’s wedding had a lot of moving parts, all of which came together seamlessly, with the result being a perfect wedding. Between a 3 microphone ceremony setup, sound systems set up in 3 distinct areas, and a full lighting package that included custom lavender-colored uplights, I had many elements to attend to, and happily, it all worked exactly as hoped.

Usually, it’s the bride who hires me and handles the bulk of the planning, but this time around it was the groom. He was really easy to work with, and had some great ideas for the music, including the Midnite String Quartet tracks to be played before the ceremony began. He chose the bride’s processional song, which was a surprise for her, and the Gordon Lightfoot song he chose was perfect, as was his choice for their recessional. He also chose one of the dance tracks, an uptempo electronic song by his daughter Sofia, aka So4py Sof. That energized the crowd, and kept things lively on the dance floor. Despite being a slightly older group, last night’s guests hit the dance floor from the moment it opened– actually, they hit the floor earlier, as there were already some dancers when it was time to switch to “official” dance time and have the couple’s first dance– and stayed there until the very last song.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing dancers react positively to the songs I choose for them, and I really do believe that my song selections, and microphone work, along with the couple’s pre-event requests, were a large part of what turned what could have been an event that ended early into a fun and energetic dance party. And on that topic, here’s a recap of everything I played yesterday.

  • Hailey & Nakia’s Wedding 9-28-24

    Hailey & Nakia’s Wedding 9-28-24

Not only am I an Austin wedding DJ, I’m a Dripping Springs wedding DJ, too. Case in point, I was at Ma Maison yesterday, a beautiful wedding venue in Dripping Springs, and one at which I often play. The day started with an outdoor ceremony in the grove, followed by cocktails on the trellis, and capped with dinner and dancing in the great hall. The guests yesterday made my job easy. They were a lively, fun bunch.

Normally, when I introduce the couple into the reception hall I need to get the guests warmed up and ready to make noise for the bride and groom, but this group was deafening from the start. By the time I brought Hailey and Nakia into the room you’d have thought there was a football match taking place in that room for all the screaming and stomping. I love that kind of energy, as it usually manifests later that night on the dance floor.

That’s exactly what happened last night. When it came time to dance I had the group screaming and bouncing off the walls from start to finish. By the time I closed the night everyone looked exhausted and happy, and the happy couple had nothing but praise for me while we waited for the room to clear so I could start their private last dance.

The entire event crew was a joy to work with, including Melanie and Aubrey from Something to CelebrateDani Quiroz and Brenna, who took photos, and the entire Ma Maison staff. At many venues you have to hunt high and low to find the one on-site representative, but Ma Maison seems always to have a full staff on hand, ready to handle anything and everything that pops up.

  • Morgan and Anthony’s Wedding 9-8-24

    Morgan and Anthony’s Wedding 9-8-24

The Arlo in Austin, Texas, is a beautiful spot for a wedding. The ballroom is elegant, but understated, and can be transformed with lighting and effects, which is exactly what I did last night. I brought out the full kit– moving head effects, wash lights, uplights, strobes, haze machines, and more, along with a projector to display videos, and the couple’s name, on a large, white wall. The effect was remarkable, and the room went from elegant during dinner to a party vibe once dancing started. I’ve shared some pictures and videos below to give a better sense of what I did.

This is the Blue Moon Beats Austin wedding DJ booth.
We use lighting effects to display patterns on the wall.
At Blue Moon Beats, your Austin Wedding DJ displays your monogram on the wall.

    Carlly & Christian’s Wedding 9-14-24

Yesterday I DJ’ed a wedding in Austin at the Hudson Bend Ranch. This was my first time playing at the venue, and it was a great first experience. The owner is laid back and easy-going, the load-in is very easy, and the property is pretty. Everything was great, except for one minor thing: I had some unanticipated neighbors just above my DJ booth.

That’s right, directly overhead was a busy hornet’s nest! I was a little concerned at first, but they kept to themselves, more or less. Every now and then one flew by my face, but for the most part I was able to ignore them, and after it got dark they all went to bed, and I was never stung. Whew!

The wedding was nice. The ceremony took place elsewhere on the property, so I played cocktail and dinner music, then transitioned into a dance set. Everyone seemed to have a great time, and the bride and groom were full of praise once I was done. These are the songs I played.
